The federal government has restated its commitment to strengthen democratic governance, promote national unity and address challenges confronting the country as Nigeria marks the 27th Democracy Day on June 12, 2026.

In a statement issued to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, the minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, said Nigerians would join in special prayers including a juma’at service as part of activities to commemorate the historic day.

He noted that the occasion serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability depend not only on good governance but also on the prayers, support and active participation of citizens.

According to him, Democracy Day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigeria’s heroes of democracy, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose role in the struggle for democratic governance remains significant.

The minister also highlighted that 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance represent a testament to the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the collective determination of citizens to uphold constitutional rule.

“Democracy Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the strength of our democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule,” he stated.

Reaffirming the position of the administration, Idris said the federal government under President Bola Tinubu, remained committed to deepening democratic governance and fostering national cohesion.

He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to renew their commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship, stressing that the country’s diversity remains its greatest strength.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation,” the statement read.

He further called on citizens to reject division, embrace dialogue, and promote values that strengthen democracy and national cohesion.

“Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion,” Idris added.

The Minister concluded by praying for continued peace, unity, and prosperity for Nigeria, as well as divine guidance for leaders and protection for security personnel.

“May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guide our leaders, protect our security personnel, and grant our nation enduring peace, unity and prosperity,” he said.
