Federal Govt Urged To Reduce Duties On Fitness Gadgets

Chairman of Gategold Fitness Company Limited, Sir Goodluck Obi (KSC) has pleaded with the federal government to reduce import duties on fitness, exercise, gym, sports and spa equipment to make them affordable and accessible nationwide.

In an interaction with journalists, Obi said regular exercise had become as essential to well-being as daily supplements.

He argued that lowering import duties would reduce costs for end users and allow more Nigerians across all income levels to live healthier lifestyles.

“As it stands, these items are linked directly to public health. Reducing the duty will help more people stay healthy, improve productivity, and lower the rate of preventable sudden deaths,” he said.

Sir Obi, a fitness expert and entrepreneur with nearly two decades of experience promoting fitness and human kinetics in Nigeria, noted that sudden deaths and collapses in public places are reported almost daily.

“Upon our investigations, we are discovering, to our dismay, that many of these tragedies are linked to lack of exercise and poor access to fitness facilities,” he stated.

He highlighted that Gategold Fitness has successfully sold, delivered, and installed fitness equipment in numerous homes and public gyms across the country. The company was also recognised as the Best Fitness Equipment Dealer in Nigeria for 2025.

“On our part, we give generous discounts and flexible payment terms to our clients. We also provide free installation, lower costs for spare parts, and access to counselling by trained instructors as part of our corporate social responsibility,” he said.
