Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly admitted that he felt a deep sense of disappointment when Declan Rice opted to join Arsenal instead of moving to Old Trafford.
The England international midfielder made a high-profile switch from West Ham United to the Gunners in the summer of 2023, becoming the most expensive signing in Arsenal’s history after the north London club agreed to a staggering £105 million deal.
Since then, Rice has cemented himself as an indispensable figure in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven, helping transform Arsenal into genuine title contenders.
However, prior to his departure from the Hammers, Rice was one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League. Both Manchester United and Manchester City were heavily linked with the 24-year-old, fueling widespread speculation that a bidding war could erupt for his signature.
In an interview on the JoelBeya TV channel, Fernandes revealed his personal frustration that the transfer never materialised for the Red Devils.
“Obviously, I knew him already from West Ham, and we all knew the qualities he had,” Fernandes explained. “I have always said that I thought Declan Rice was a player made to play for Manchester United.”
The Portuguese playmaker did not hold back his emotions, adding: “I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I don’t know if there was ever a real opportunity or a genuine chance for him to come to Manchester United, but I always thought that he would be the perfect fit for our club.”
Fernandes’ comments highlight a lingering sense of regret among United fans and players alike, as Rice continues to thrive at the Emirates, while United’s own midfield rebuild remains a work in progress.
