The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the National Nutrition Bill 2026 and the revised National Policy on Food and Nutrition in Nigeria as part of efforts to improve the nutritional status of Nigerians and reduce child stunting.
The Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Uzoka-Anite said the two documents were developed through collaboration involving the Office of the Vice President, the ministries responsible for budget and economic planning, agriculture, livestock, education and health, as well as the private sector, the National Assembly and development partners.
According to her, the documents provide a framework for the governance, coordination and implementation of food and nutrition programmes across the country.
She said they would also help institutionalise sustainable financing for nutrition programmes and strengthen collaboration and accountability among stakeholders.
“Both documents were designed to improve the human capital development of all Nigerians, and especially reduce stunting in children,” the minister said.
Uzoka-Anite added that the National Nutrition Bill 2026 was an executive bill that would be transmitted to the National Assembly for consideration.
She said the initiative formed part of the federal government’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of Nigerians and promote a healthier, more productive population.
