FG Moves To Boost Fertiliser Supply For Farmers

The Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) says it is advancing to a new phase designed to guarantee a stable and uninterrupted fertiliser supply for Nigerian farmers, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for food sovereignty.

Tagged PFI 3.0, the initiative will prioritise year-round availability of raw materials for blending plants, improve cost efficiency, and strengthen local sourcing to reduce dependence on imports.
According to the PFI, more raw materials were already supplied or ordered in 2025 than in 2024, and warehouses nationwide are now stocked to support blending plants at full capacity.

New data from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), which will take over management of the programme from the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) in November 2025, shows that between 2022 and September 2025, 48 vessels delivered critical fertiliser inputs to Nigeria.

In 2025 alone, 10 vessels discharged cargoes, accounting for more than 560,000 metric tonnes of materials received at the nation’s ports.

Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, Managing Director of MOFI, said the programme was designed to shield farmers from global market shocks. “We are meticulously building a system that can insulate farmers from global market shocks and instil the confidence needed for long-term agricultural planning,” he said.

Since its inception, the initiative has facilitated the production of over 128 million bags of fertiliser, including 4.5 million metric tonnes of finished products between 2021 and 2024.

The Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) said this has been made possible by the growth of local blending plants, which now number more than 90 nationwide and have a combined capacity of 13 million metric tonnes.

FEPSAN president Alhaji Sadiq Kassim said the expanded network has ensured fertilisers are closer to farmers and reduced transportation costs.

While acknowledging concerns about rising fertiliser prices, industry leaders attributed the challenge to foreign exchange volatility and global raw material costs rather than local scarcity.

The PFI said the new phase will introduce reforms to curb hoarding, improve traceability, and accelerate domestic input production to strengthen Nigeria’s agro-industrial base.

“The PFI is a prime example of public–private collaboration that can solve complex national challenges,” Dr Takang added. “Its future is a testament to Nigeria’s capacity for strategic reform.”
