FIFA has appointed Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić to officiate Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, entrusting one of football’s biggest fixtures to one of Europe’s most experienced match officials.
The governing body confirmed that Vinčić will be assisted by fellow Slovenians Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič, while Adham Makhadmeh of Jordan will serve as the fourth official for the showpiece at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for the 46-year-old Slovenian, who will oversee the biggest match of the tournament after a series of assured performances during the World Cup.
The final will be Vinčić’s fourth assignment at the expanded 48-team tournament. He previously took charge of the group-stage matches between Brazil and Morocco and Jordan and Algeria, before officiating the Round of 32 encounter between Mexico and Ecuador.
That knockout fixture attracted global attention after Vinčić dismissed Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié under FIFA’s strengthened anti-discrimination protocol, widely known as the “Vinícius Law”. The incident was one of the most talked-about refereeing decisions of the tournament and highlighted FIFA’s determination to enforce stricter measures against discriminatory conduct.
Vinčić is no stranger to football’s biggest occasions. Regarded as one of UEFA’s elite referees, he has built a reputation for calm decision-making and effective game management in high-pressure matches across European and international competitions.
His selection for the World Cup final reflects FIFA’s confidence in his ability to handle what is expected to be a fiercely contested clash between two footballing giants.
The final pits reigning world champions Argentina against a Spain side chasing another global crown after an impressive campaign. Argentina booked their place in the final by coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in the semi-finals, while Spain edged France to secure the other berth.
With Lionel Messi seeking to crown his illustrious international career with another World Cup triumph and Spain aiming to reclaim football’s biggest prize, the spotlight will not only be on the players but also on Vinčić and his officiating team as they seek to ensure a fair and memorable conclusion to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
