FIFA Intervention Offers Fresh Hope For Nigeria Football — Odegbami

Former Nigeria captain Segun Odegbami has described FIFA’s intervention in the country’s football administration crisis as a “blessing”, following a two-day stakeholder meeting in Abuja.

Odegbami, who participated in Tuesday’s fact-finding meeting involving representatives of the world body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and other stakeholders, said the discussions were held in a cordial atmosphere.

In a piece titled “Meeting with FIFA – foto no dey lie!”, the former Green Eagles captain said the meeting brought members of Nigeria’s football community together to discuss the challenges confronting the sport.

He said the FIFA delegation demonstrated a clear understanding of the major issues affecting Nigerian football before the meeting, while the discussions provided additional information that could assist the governing body in determining the next steps.

“The FIFA delegation, in their few remarks during the conversation, demonstrated that they know the main issues with Nigerian football pretty well,” Odegbami stated.

According to him, the meeting could provide a foundation for changes to the administration of Nigerian football.

“Reforms are coming, with or without a Normalization Committee,” he declared.

The former international also stressed FIFA’s role in implementing any decisions eventually reached by the stakeholders.

“It is also clear that only FIFA can provide the instrument to enforce any final decisions,” he said.

The reform process has been marked by differing positions among stakeholders over the appropriate mechanism for addressing the leadership vacuum in the NFF and restructuring football administration.

While some stakeholders have called for a FIFA-backed Normalisation Committee, others have favoured an interim arrangement within the existing football structures.

Odegbami said the differences would require compromise from all sides.

“There shall be likely compromises by all the parties, everyone giving up a little and taking a little,” he added.

He described FIFA’s intervention as “a blessing” and “a necessary step”, while expressing satisfaction with the atmosphere at the meeting.

“Mission to Abuja accomplished,” Odegbami concluded, saying he left the meeting encouraged by the “good feelings” shared by participants.
