FIFA Shares Record $871m Prize Pot To Spain, Argentina, Others

Spain’s triumph over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has delivered not only global football glory but also a record financial windfall, with FIFA confirming a $51 million (£) winners’ cheque as part of an unprecedented $871 million prize fund for the tournament.

The world football governing body announced that champions Spain will receive $51 million, while finalists Argentina will earn $34 million following the conclusion of the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2026 tournament boasts the largest prize pool in World Cup history after FIFA increased the overall fund by more than $100 million earlier this year in response to the expanded competition.

Spain’s payout eclipses the $42 million awarded to Argentina for winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, underlining FIFA’s commitment to significantly increasing financial rewards for participating nations. However, the amount still falls short of the prize money awarded to the winners of last year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

Every one of the 48 competing nations received guaranteed financial support from FIFA, regardless of their performance on the pitch. Each national federation was paid $12.5 million, made up of $10 million for qualifying and participating in the group stage, plus an additional $2.5 million to cover pre-tournament preparation and training expenses.

The introduction of the preparation allowance is designed to minimise disputes between players and national football associations over bonuses before the tournament begins, while also helping federations meet the increased costs associated with participating in the expanded competition.

Prize money then rose progressively based on how far each team advanced in the tournament, with the champions collecting the largest share of the record-breaking fund.

FIFA’s decision to increase the overall prize pool followed pressure from several national associations, particularly in Europe, which argued that the original financial package would not adequately offset the significantly higher travel and logistical costs created by staging the tournament across three host nations.

In addition to extensive travel between venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico, teams playing matches in the United States were also required to meet tax obligations that do not apply in the other two host countries, further increasing operational expenses.

Beyond the prize money, FIFA covered a substantial portion of each delegation’s tournament costs. These included business-class return flights, accommodation and meals for a 50-member delegation from five days before a team’s opening match until one day after its elimination.

The governing body also provided domestic transportation throughout the competition, including official vehicles and dedicated equipment trucks for every participating nation.

National football federations, however, remained responsible for player and staff insurance, incidental hotel expenses and the costs of accommodating delegation members exceeding FIFA’s allocated limit of 50.

The World Cup prize money is paid directly to each national football federation rather than individual players. Each association determines how the funds are distributed in accordance with its own regulations and contractual agreements with players.

For instance, the United States Soccer Federation retains 20 per cent of its World Cup prize money, while the remaining 80 per cent is shared equally between the men’s and women’s national teams under the country’s landmark equal-pay agreement.
