The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate and current deputy governor of Kano State, Dr. Nasir Gawuna, has finally conceded defeat and congratulated the winner of the election and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, over his victory in the March 18 governorship election.
LEADERSHIP recalls that Gawuna had earlier rejected the election result and had petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the outcome of the election.
He also urged the electoral body to declare the governorship election inconclusive and conduct supplementary election in some polling units.
However, the electoral body on Wednesday ignored the requests of the APC candidate and issued certificate of return to the governor-elect as the winner of the exercise.
In an audio message aired by Freedom Radio in Kano and monitored by LEADERSHIP, Gawuna said he has now accepted defeat in good faith.
He also wished Abba Gida Gida well as he takes over the mantle of leadership of the State on May 29.
“I Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the deputy governor of Kano and the APC governorship candidate hereby express gratitude to almighty God and the people of Kano for coming out to vote us on Saturday 18th March 2023.
“Supporters and lovers are aware that we petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the irregularities in the election and asked it to conduct supplementary election in the affected polling units.
“But today, 29th March, the electoral body has reiterated that Abba Kabir Yusuf is the winner of the election as it issued him certificate of return.
“I want to remind you that we have from the beginning prayed that if winning the election would be a blessing to us, may we succeed. If it is not, God should give us what is best for us. Therefore I call on my supporters to accept it in good faith. I pray that the winner will be just and fair to everyone and we the followers will be law abiding,” Gawuna stated.
