A fire broke out at Abbatuwa Cemetery in Fagge local government area of Kano State on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, burning several parts of the burial grounds.

In a statement released by the State Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, on Thursday, he said the blaze was first reported around 2:02 p.m. by a local resident, Bashir Hassan. “Immediately, our men from the Agency’s Headquarters mobilized to the scene of the incident,” the release stated.

On arrival, firefighters found that “A part of the cemetery was on fire which had spread rapidly due to the presence of dry grasses within the premises.” The agency said its personnel worked swiftly to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

“Although the fire was successfully brought under control, several parts of the cemetery were badly affected,” the statement added. It, however, confirmed that no casualties were recorded.

Preliminary investigations suggested human activity may have caused the blaze. The Fire Service strongly warned the public, particularly smokers, to “stop smoking or carrying naked flames within the cemetery premises and other areas with dry grasses, in order to prevent future recurrence.”

The agency reassured residents of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property across Kano State.
