A property believed to be owned by a former Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima, was on Saturday razed in a fire outbreak in Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred at No. 13 Nelson Mandela Street, Asokoro, in the Federal Capital Territory, where four out of five blocks of three-bedroom flats were detroyed by the inferno.
Viral videos on the social media, including one shared by Northern Trends on Instagram, showed thick smoke and raging flames engulfing the building as firefighters battled to contain its spread.
Head of Public Affairs of the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, while confirming the incident in a statement, said the affected property is believed to belong to the former Zamfara governor.
Quoting the Head of FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, Monday Addie, Isa said the incident was reported at about 1 p.m. and that no lives were lost. “However, the four affected flats were totally burned,” the statement said.
Isa added that the inferno destroyed household items including furniture, clothing, foodstuffs and other personal effects belonging to the occupants.
“Personnel of FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency and the FCT Police Command attended to the incident,” Isa said.
According to FEND, preliminary observations suggested that the inferno may have started from the solar power installations.
