The Controller General, Federal Fire Service (FFS), Engr. Abdulganiyu O. Jaji, has made a compelling call for fuel tanker owners across the country to equip their vehicles with anti-spill locks to avert further fuel tanker explosions that can cause devastating loss of life and property.

Engr Jaji ‘s call comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including the tragic Dikko tanker explosion and the recent disaster in Enugu state, both of which highlighted the severe risks of fuel tanker accidents.

Speaking while declaring open a career progression training for personnel of the service at Sheda , the Controller- general emphasised the urgent need for heightened security and operational standards in the transport of hazardous materials, warning that the risks posed by fuel tankers, especially in densely populated areas, could no longer be ignored.

“Fuel tankers are not just ordinary vehicles. They carry life-threatening cargo that, if mishandled, can lead to devastating accidents. The installation of anti-spill locks is no longer optional—it is an essential measure that must be adopted immediately,” Jaji declared.

“This simple yet crucial mechanism will reduce the risk of explosions and save lives.”

He called on the Ministry of Transport to enforce stricter regulations for tanker drivers, particularly in ensuring that they possess valid, up-to-date licenses. “The stakes are too high for lax regulations,” he said, urging for more comprehensive training programmes and periodic health and safety checks for drivers.

The FFS herdsman also revealed plans to partner the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) to spread awareness about these new safety initiatives. “Public education on these issues is essential.

Tanker owners, drivers, and the public must be made fully aware of the dangers and the urgent need for compliance with these new regulations,” he stated.

He said their partnership emphasises the urgent need for regulatory enforcement, regular vehicle inspections to ensure functional fire extinguishers in tankers, and strict adherence to safety standards. It is also crucial that drivers undergo thorough evaluations to ensure they meet the highest standards.

His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, remains steadfast in his commitment to transforming this Service into a globally recognised leader in firefighting and emergency response.

“However, the success of this vision rests with us. We must learn, adapt, and constantly align our service delivery with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This is not just about career advancement—this is about preparing each and every one of you for greater responsibilities, strategic decision-making, and leadership in emergency management.

He also said; “I also extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his unwavering support in advancing the Federal Fire Service. His dedication to repositioning the Service is evident, and I am confident that under his guidance, we will set new benchmarks in fire safety, not just within Nigeria but on a global scale. ”
Engr Jaji who further explained that personnel undergoing the Career Progression Course were provided with accommodation in both the female and male hostels, said, “and we make sure you are fed twice a day. This is a basic necessity, and we will continue to go fulfill it.

Jaji whose voice was laced with both pride and disappointment. said, “Despite our efforts, some personnel have been spreading lies about their conditions here—claiming they are stranded and hungry. I challenge anyone here to prove me wrong. If any of you have been excluded from these provisions, stand up and speak now. But I know the truth, and I know that we are providing for you.

“I am not discouraged by these criticisms. As an administrator, I understand that every criticism is an opportunity for growth. It only makes me more determined to continue the work we have set out to do, to equip you with the best skills and knowledge. The welfare of our officers will always be my priority.

“Our mission is clear. We will continue to train, innovate, and uphold the highest standards of firefighting. Together, we will meet the challenges ahead.

“Since the inception of this programme, we have successfully trained over 330 officers, between 2023-2024, with 114 currently enrolled this 2025. These officers span ranks from GL 04 to the rank of Controller General of Fire. This milestone speaks volumes about our dedication to developing a highly skilled and competent firefighting workforce. He stated.
