Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing oral health and supporting evidence-based research on fluoride use for better dental outcomes.

The reaffirmation was made during a Colgate-sponsored symposium at the 22nd Annual Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR), Nigerian Division, held recently at the Colossus Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

The conference, themed “Fluoride in the Spotlight: Cavities Prevention and the Ongoing Debate,” brought together experts in dental research and public health to discuss global concerns surrounding fluoride use and its scientifically proven benefits in preventing cavities.

Speakers at the symposium included Professor Omolara Uti, a Professor of Dental Public Health at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and Dr Afolabi Oyapero, a Senior Lecturer at the Lagos State University College of Medicine. Both experts emphasised the importance of accurate public communication regarding fluoride safety and effectiveness.

Dr Oyapero explained that fluoride plays a dual role in strengthening enamel before and after tooth eruption. Citing international studies, he noted that the consistent use of fluoride-based products can reduce dental caries by 25 per cent to 70 per cent, depending on formulation and frequency of use. He urged policymakers to adopt research-backed regulations that reflect Nigeria’s unique environmental conditions.

Professor Uti described fluoride as one of the most significant public health achievements in reducing tooth decay globally. She emphasised that despite persistent misinformation, scientific evidence continues to support fluoride’s safety and effectiveness when used appropriately.

“Our role as professionals extends beyond clinical expertise to becoming advocates for public understanding and trust,” she said.

“Fluoride does not cause cancer, and science supports its safety. What matters is how we communicate these facts and ensure that oral health becomes a right accessible to all.”

Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram also held a product presentation at the conference, where its Professional Relations/BSBF Manager, Dr Ogechukwu MacJohnson, showcased Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste. The product, formulated with zinc phosphate, strengthens enamel and protects against acid attacks while relieving tooth sensitivity.
