Abuja-based real estate firm, Roomeo Construction Ltd, has inaugurated “The REAL Series 1 – The Real Estate Annual Lecture” to create a platform for leaders, innovators, decision-makers, and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s housing sector to share insights and strategies on ways to harnessing the potential in the industry.

At an event held in commemoration of 2023 World Habitat Day, with the theme “State Of The Nigerian Housing Sector And The Path To Progress” witnessed the unveiling of “The Sequence,” a 12-unit, 2-bedroom serviced apartment building in Kaura District, Abuja.

Convener of The Real Series and Founder/CEO Roomeo, Doyin Adewola in his address said the world is facing unprecedented challenges regarding sustainability, and that there’s a need for everyone to take action to make a difference by ensuring our habitats remain vibrant and healthy for generations.

Speaking further, Adewola stressed the need for more investment in infrastructure, adding that cities in Nigeria can be a powerful driver of growth and recovery through promoting innovation, and fostering a supportive business environment.

Unveiling the building, he said the journey of Sequence 1 began in December 2012 after the discovery of a gap in the commercial real estate leasing model. “We attempted to create an alternative for an entirely different market segment through which our first expression, Box Office Hub, was founded.

He revealed that the firm has set a 10-year goal to provide 1,000 homes for Nigerians starting in 2024, adding that everyone has the right to affordable housing and good quality of living. “We will continue to put in work to eliminate the barriers to attaining gainful and sustainable returns on real estate.”

On his part, Chairman, Modern Tek’Nik Associates, Engr. Otunba Victor o. Raydon while delivering a lecture on the causes of structural failures in the housing sector said it is regrettable that buildings are failing and consequently collapsing all over the country despite the robust standards, specifications, regulations and laws put in place by government and professional bodies.

While proffering solutions, he urged developers and engineers to always adhere strictly to all design steps and precautions, by hiring certified professionals in both designs and constructions, adhere to specifications, standards and compliance in the building Code and also ensure synergy amongst the professional bodies.

“Government must identify and prosecute landowners, investors, consultants, architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, and project managers involved in cutting corners. They should be prosecuted, and if found guilty of the offence be sent to jail and have their practicing licenses revoked.”

Director, Department of Development Control, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Town Planer Mukhtar Galadima Usman, in his address advised real estate firms to always adhere to approved building plans, lamenting that many developers have been in the habit of cutting corners, hence the prevalent building collapse.
