First Olojo Festival 5km Road Race Promises World-class Experience

The inaugural Olojo Festival 5km Road Race is set to deliver a world-class experience this week in the historic city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, known as the cradle of Yorubaland.

Scheduled to coincide with the iconic Olojo Festival, this race is the first of its kind, recognised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to be held alongside a major cultural celebration.

Olojo, which translates to ‘Day of the First Dawn’, honours Ogun, the god of iron and war, and commemorates the mythical first day of creation in Yoruba cosmology.

Organised by Sooko Adeleke Odewade in collaboration with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative and endorsed by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the race aims to empower youth, promote healthy living and diversify the festival’s offerings.

Director of the Race, Tony Osheku, a renowned track and field coach explained, “We want a race that is open to all Nigerian elite runners and everyone in and around Ile-Ife. A 5km distance is achievable for most people, making it inclusive for amateur runners and youth.”

Osheku emphasised the race’s potential to generate excitement and boost local businesses, drawing spectators, sponsors, and tourists.

Odewade highlighted the initiative’s long-term vision, stating, “This race is a platform to identify raw potential, but it won’t stop there. We’re building a system of coaching, mentorship, and support long after the race ends.”

Participants will receive Certificates of Participation, with special cash prizes awarded to category winners.

An official from the Alade’fa Initiative remarked, “This is more than a race; it’s a movement, an investment in youth, in health, and in the cultural soul of our community.”
