Worried by the impact of flooding on farmers’ food security and livelihoods, the Bauchi State government has called on farmers to actively utilise the huge opportunity dry season farming offers to cultivate crops to ensure food security and improved well-being.

LEADERSHIP reports that about 16 local government areas in Bauchi recorded one or more incidents of flood disasters last year, leading to the death of 24 people while 163 others were severely injured.
Similarly, the flood cut off about 12 major roads, destroyed 60 culverts, displaced 122,330 households, destroyed 52,035 houses, collapsed 178 electric poles, and lost 11,183 livestock.

The programme manager of the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP), Ya’u Muhammed, encouraged farmers to embrace dry-season farming, noting its advantages over the rainy season, which is often plagued by challenges such as flooding, drought, pests, and diseases.

He, however, warned farmers to acquire relevant knowledge and skills, which BSADP personnel offer free to maximise the opportunity presented to them through dry season farming.

The programme manager noted that the dry season farming initiative was highly impactful.

He assured farmers that BSADP remains committed to supporting agricultural activities and collaborating with farmer groups to extend agricultural education.
