Flood Destroys Property, Farmlands In Kaduna Community

Residents of Ungwa Maigero community in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State yesterday lost property worth millions of naira to flood after a torrential rainfall.

The rain which started at about 5am fell intermittently till 8am.

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that the heavy downpour affected and destroyed the means of livelihood of some of the residents in the community.

Our correspondent who visited the community observed that shops, fish ponds, farmlands and property located around Living Faith Church Ungwa Maigero were destroyed by the torrential downpour.

One of the affected farmers who simply identified himself as Mr Zamani told LEADERSHIP Sunday that his maize farm which was ready for harvest when the flood occurred was badly affected as most of the submerged maize was spoiled in the floodwater.

Another farmer, Mr Amos Zango said he lost five hectares of his maize farm to the flood.

It was gathered that the flood also destroyed vehicles and property worth millions of naira in the community.

A businessman owner at one of the popular supermarkets, Mr Ikechukwu Nweke said that the flood caused a lot of damage to his investment.

He said, “My shop containing millions of goods was affected by the flood; it destroyed so many things here. As it stands, only God can determine what I have lost so far.”

Residents of the affected areas attributed the flood to inadequate drainage system.
