Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and elder statesman, Sir Mike Okiro, has cautioned Nigerian politicians who are defecting from one party to another.
He called on them to prioritise the interests of the people who voted them into power.
Okiro commended President Bola Tinubu for his exemplary leadership, especially in handling the country’s affairs and in resolving the political crisis in Rivers State. He also urged Governor Siminilayi
Fubara to reconcile with his godfather and minister of FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike.
The former police boss’s statement came against the backdrop of a wave of defections in the country, the recent being that of the Delta State governor, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, and other party members in the state.
While acknowledging politicians’ right to switch parties to protect their political interests, he further stressed the need for them to prioritise the interests of the people who voted them into office
The ex-police boss and stakeholder in Rivers State politics also praised the sole administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, for maintaining law and order since his assumption of office.
He added: “In light of the recent wave of defections by sitting State governors, serving senators, serving members of the House of Representatives, and numerous House of Assembly members,
“It is important for politicians to act in the genuine interest of their constituents.
“They should also avoid making decisions solely based on personal gains; rather, they should consider the impact of their actions on the people they govern or represent.”
The elder statesman thereafter called on all politicians to prioritise peace and the well-being of their followers.
He tasked them to work towards the unity and progress of Nigeria.
