Foundation Begins Free Surgery For 611 Cataract Patients

A total of 611 vulnerable cataract patients in Katsina State are receiving free surgery under a medical outreach organised by the Mangal Foundation.

The free programme holding at the Katsina Eye Centre is aimed at restoring sight to people suffering from cataracts and reducing the burden of preventable blindness among vulnerable residents.

During the flag-off of the exercise on Wednesday, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Mr Hussaini Kabir, said more than 2,000 people with different eye conditions were screened for the intervention.

He explained that while some patients were treated with free medications and prescription glasses, 611 patients diagnosed with cataracts were selected for free surgery.

Kabir said the foundation had sustained the intervention for about eight years, restoring the sight of thousands of people in Katsina State, the neighbouring states and parts of the Niger Republic.
