The death of Dolly Parton at 80 has brought renewed attention to the remarkable catalogue of music she leaves behind, spanning country, pop and gospel and producing songs that became enduring favourites across generations.

Among her most recognisable solo recordings are “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Coat of Many Colours” and “Here You Come Again.”

Her songs about love, heartbreak, work, family and personal struggle helped establish her as one of country music’s most distinctive songwriters and performers.

Parton was also responsible for some of country music’s most memorable collaborations. Her 1983 duet with Kenny Rogers, “Islands in the Stream,” became a major crossover hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the most recognisable country-pop duets ever recorded.

Her songwriting reached an even wider global audience when Whitney Houston’s 1992 version of “I Will Always Love You” became a worldwide phenomenon, introducing Parton’s composition to millions of listeners who may not have previously known her work.

Even in her later years, Parton’s music continued to find new audiences through covers and collaborations with younger artists, underscoring the extraordinary staying power of a catalogue that has remained relevant across generations.
