From Promise To Harvest: How Governor Alia’s Annual Fertilizer Intervention Is Redefining Agriculture In Benue

By all measures, agriculture remains the backbone of Benue State’s economy. Known as Nigeria’s “Food Basket,” the state derives much of its economic strength, social stability, and food production capacity from the millions of farmers who cultivate its fertile lands. Yet for years, many of these farmers have struggled with the high cost of agricultural inputs, particularly fertilizer, which is essential for improving crop yields and ensuring profitable harvests.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia has consistently placed agriculture at the center of his administration’s development agenda. One of the most visible demonstrations of this commitment has been the annual flag-off of subsidized fertilizer and agricultural input distribution programmes aimed at reducing production costs and boosting food production across the state.

What began as an intervention in 2023 has evolved into a sustained and expanding agricultural support programme that has now entered its fourth consecutive year.

On July 20, 2023, barely two months after taking office, Governor Alia flagged off the sale and distribution of subsidized fertilizer to farmers across Benue State. At the time, the initiative was seen as an early signal of the administration’s determination to support agricultural production and cushion farmers against rising input costs.

The intervention provided farmers access to fertilizer at subsidized rates while also establishing mechanisms to prevent diversion and ensure that genuine farmers benefited from the programme.

The following year, on July 10, 2024, the governor expanded the scope of the intervention during the official flag-off of the 2024 Cropping Season and Distribution of Agricultural Inputs. Beyond fertilizer, the programme incorporated improved seeds, seedlings, agrochemicals, and other farming inputs designed to increase productivity.

During that exercise, Governor Alia revealed that his administration had distributed 100 trucks of subsidized fertilizer in 2023 and announced plans to significantly scale up support for farmers.

By 2025, the programme had grown considerably. On September 17, Governor Alia flagged off the 2025 fertilizer distribution programme involving 9,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer, equivalent to 600 truckloads. The scale of the intervention underscored the administration’s intention to move beyond short-term support toward a more structured agricultural transformation strategy.

The most recent milestone came on June 4, 2026, when Governor Alia officially launched the 2026 Fertilizer and Other Farm Inputs Sales and Distribution Exercise at the Benue Fertilizer and Chemicals Company, Makurdi.

At the ceremony, the governor announced that fertilizer would be sold to farmers at a subsidized rate of N28,000 per bag, while the state government would provide an additional N28,000 subsidy, effectively covering half of the prevailing market cost.

The programme was expanded to include improved seedlings, herbicides, agrochemicals, and other farm inputs, with distribution taking place across all 23 local government areas to ensure equitable access.

While fertilizer distribution often attracts headlines, the significance of the annual interventions extends far beyond the supply of farm inputs.

The programme represents a strategic effort to tackle some of the most persistent challenges facing farmers, including rising production costs, declining soil fertility, low productivity, and limited access to quality agricultural inputs.

By reducing the cost burden on farmers, the government enables them to cultivate larger areas of land, improve crop yields, and increase profitability. This not only benefits individual households but also contributes to broader economic growth.

The administration’s emphasis on transparency and accountability has equally become a defining feature of the programme. Governor Alia has consistently warned against diversion of inputs and strengthened monitoring mechanisms to ensure that subsidies reach genuine farmers.

The introduction and expansion of cashless payment systems have further improved accountability, reducing opportunities for abuse while making the distribution process more efficient.

Food security remains one of the most important outcomes of the annual fertilizer interventions.

In a period marked by inflation, global supply chain disruptions, and rising food prices, increased agricultural productivity has become more critical than ever. Access to quality fertilizer and improved inputs enables farmers to produce more food from the same acreage, helping to stabilize supply and moderate food shortages.

As production increases, consumers benefit through improved food availability, while farmers gain higher incomes from better harvests.

For a state that prides itself as the nation’s food basket, maintaining high levels of agricultural productivity is essential not only for local consumption but also for supplying food to other parts of Nigeria.

Agriculture remains the largest source of livelihood for many rural communities in Benue State. Consequently, every successful farming season generates ripple effects throughout the rural economy.

When farmers receive affordable inputs, they spend less on production and retain more profit after harvest. Increased earnings support household welfare, children’s education, healthcare, and local commerce.

The annual fertilizer interventions therefore serve as economic empowerment programmes that stimulate growth beyond the farm.

Governor Alia has complemented these efforts with investments in rural roads, irrigation projects, agro-processing initiatives, farmer training programmes, and partnerships designed to attract investment into the agricultural sector.

These complementary initiatives suggest a broader vision aimed at creating an integrated agricultural value chain capable of generating employment, supporting industries, and driving sustainable development.

The fertilizer programme has also contributed to strengthening local production capacity.

During the 2026 flag-off, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Star Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited, Mr. Julius Atorough, disclosed that the company supplied 495 trucks out of the 600 trucks ordered by the state government in the previous programme and had delivered an additional 200 trucks during the dry-season farming period.

He further announced plans to expand production capacity from five trucks daily to approximately 20 trucks daily through the installation of a new automated blending line.

The proposed establishment of a limestone granulating plant in Benue State could create additional economic opportunities, increase local value addition, and support industrial development linked to agriculture.

Four consecutive years of fertilizer and farm input flag-offs tell a story of policy consistency in a sector that remains vital to Benue’s future.

From the distribution of subsidized fertilizer in 2023, to the expanded agricultural support programme of 2024, the large-scale intervention of 2025, and the enhanced subsidy and input package of 2026, Governor Alia’s administration has steadily built a framework aimed at improving productivity and supporting farmers.

The true measure of success will ultimately be reflected in increased yields, improved incomes, stronger rural economies, and sustained food security.

However, one fact is already clear: by making fertilizer and other agricultural inputs more accessible to farmers year after year, the administration has positioned agriculture as a central pillar of its development strategy and reaffirmed Benue State’s enduring role as Nigeria’s Food Basket.
