The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee as part of efforts to strengthen road infrastructure safety management and reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.

Speaking during the inaugural meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Mohammed described the inauguration as a major milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of safer roads and the achievement of global road safety targets.

He noted that road traffic crashes remain a significant public health and development challenge worldwide, stressing that proactive road infrastructure assessment is essential to protecting road users and saving lives.

The Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) was established by the FRSC in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to systematically assess the safety of road infrastructure, identify high-risk road sections and improve protection for vulnerable road users.

According to the Corps Marshal, the programme is built on three strategic pillars: strengthening local partnerships, expanding international collaborations and promoting the attainment of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.

In a statement, FRSC spokesperson, Osondu Ohaeri, said the Corps Marshal recalled that Nigeria’s journey towards institutionalising the programme began with the inauguration of a stakeholders committee in February 2021.

He added that the initiative gained further momentum with the signing of the National Licence Agreement between the FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, formally launching NigeriaRAP in the country.

Mohammed said the newly inaugurated steering committee would provide strategic direction, coordination and leadership for the successful implementation of the programme nationwide.

The committee comprises representatives from key public and private sector organisations, including the KRSD Foundation, Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), the Green Light Initiative and other strategic partners.

While appreciating members of the committee for their commitment to the initiative, the Corps Marshal urged them to remain proactive and dedicated in carrying out their responsibilities.

He expressed confidence that sustained collaboration, collective action and strategic investments in safer road infrastructure would significantly reduce road traffic fatalities and create a safer transport environment for all Nigerians.

Mohammed said the successful implementation of NigeriaRAP would not only improve road safety standards but also support national development by ensuring that road infrastructure is designed and managed to minimise risks to motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
