A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Hon Innocent Ajaelu, has said that the continued silence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the conduct of local government election in the state is giving many people serious concern.

The tenure of the current chairmen and councilors of the 23 local government areas in the state is expected to expire in July this year.

The State House of Assembly had on Wednesday amended the Local Government Law 2018, to allow it extend the tenures of LG chairmen in the state through house resolutions.

Ajaelu, who spoke with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt yesterday, expressed hope that Fubara would appoint heads of local government administration to oversee the affairs of the 23 LGAs after the expiration of the tenure of the current chairmen and councilors.

“I don’t know what the governor’s plans are as it concerns local government election. If not, we should have been having signs about the election since last month. Let me say this, local government in a state is like the education sector. Education is the bedrock of any development.

“Local government administration is the closest to the people. Anybody, be it the governor or the president that plays with local government has already failed,” he stated.
