Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has called for stronger ideological foundations in Nigeria’s political parties, saying the absence of clear political philosophies has weakened the country’s democratic process and encouraged defections driven by personal interests.
Ganduje made the call on Wednesday in Abuja while speaking at the public presentation of a book titled Nigeria’s Journey to Democratic Rule, written by Onyekachi Eze-Opezulu.
He said political parties should be guided by well-defined philosophies, programmes and policy directions that distinguish them from one another, stressing that ideology remains essential for strengthening democracy.
According to him, the lack of strong ideological foundations over the years has undermined party politics, making it difficult for citizens to identify clear policy alternatives while encouraging politicians to switch parties for personal gains rather than on the basis of principles.
He said promoting internal democracy and issue-based politics would deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture and restore public confidence in the political process.
The former Kano State governor described the book as a timely and significant contribution to documenting Nigeria’s democratic evolution, noting that preserving the nation’s political history was important for future generations.
Ganduje said democracy extends beyond the conduct of periodic elections, stressing that it is anchored on the rule of law, constitutional order, credible electoral institutions, vibrant political parties, a secure environment and free, fair and credible elections.
He urged Nigerians to continue protecting these democratic pillars, describing them as the foundation for political stability, national unity and sustainable development.
Commending the author for what he described as painstaking research, Ganduje said the publication would serve as an important reference material for students, researchers, political actors and citizens interested in understanding the evolution of democracy in Nigeria.
He noted that the book provides an opportunity for political leaders, policymakers and citizens to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, celebrate its achievements and identify areas requiring further improvement.
Reaffirming his confidence in Nigeria’s democratic future, Ganduje said the country had continued to make steady progress through the resilience of its institutions and the commitment of its people.
“Today, we can confidently say that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria,” he said.
He urged political leaders and stakeholders to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, promoting credible elections and ensuring that democracy delivers tangible benefits to Nigerians.
Ganduje congratulated Eze-Opezulu on the publication and expressed confidence that the book would enjoy wide readership and make a lasting contribution to scholarship and national discourse.
