The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is set to resign from his position, Daily Nigerian has exclusively reported on Friday.

Ganduje’s impending exit was reportedly part of a strategic move by the ruling party to calm rising discontent among stakeholders from the North-Central zone, who have consistently demanded the return of the party’s top office to the region.

According to insider accounts, Ganduje will be succeeded in acting capacity by one of the party’s national vice chairmen until a substantive chairman is elected at the APC national convention scheduled for December 2025.

“The pressure has been mounting for months. Key stakeholders, especially from the North-Central, have not relented in their push to reclaim the position,” a party source told Daily Nigerian newspaper. “Ganduje has now agreed to step aside in the party’s interest, especially as it begins early strategies for 2027.”

Ganduje, the immediate-past governor of Kano State, was appointed in August 2023 following the resignation of former national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu from North-Central zone. His tenure has since faced increasing resistance from within, particularly from those who view his appointment as a violation of the party’s internal zoning arrangements.

Several party elders and zonal leaders have, in recent months, expressed their discontent publicly and privately, urging the party to correct what they described as a “political imbalance.”

Insiders said Ganduje’s resignation was being positioned as a “unifying gesture” that will help stabilise the party, address zoning concerns, and reposition the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

No official statement has been issued by Ganduje or the party as of press time, but sources said preparations for a formal handover were already underway.

If confirmed, his resignation would mark another high-profile leadership change in the APC since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began, underscoring the shifting alliances and recalibrations within the party as it braces for future electoral contests.
