Gateway Games 2024: Edo Wins 18 Medals In Weightlifting, Kung Fu

As the 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged ‘Gateway Games’ commenced in Ogun State, Team Edo has continued to record impressive performances with the winning of 18 medals.

The sports competition, which started on May 17, 2025, saw the state winning three gold, silver seven and eight ronze medals so far.

The state’s athletes won medals across key sports, particularly in weightlifting and Kung Fu.
The medals were won by John Aladetun, in weightlifting, Kelly Alonge in Kung Fu and other athletes.

John Aladetun, bagged two gold and one silver medal in the fiercely contested Men’s 67 kg category.

Other Team Edo weightlifters added to the tally with five silver and one bronze medals, bringing the weightlifting total to two gold, six silver, and one bronze medals.

In the Kung Fu category, Kelly Alonge claimed one gold medal in the TAHULO category while others secured one silver and seven bronze medals.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, commended the athletes for their impressive start.

Enabulele, who described their performance as a testament to hard work, discipline, and determination, noted that the early results were encouraging.

He pledged the state’s continued support to ensure athletes remain focused and motivated throughout the competition.

“We are extremely proud of Team Edo’s efforts so far. The athletes have shown exceptional resilience and skill, which reflects the level of preparation they underwent before coming to this festival.

“Edo State is committed to sports excellence. Our goal is not just participation, but to dominate and win. We will continue to encourage and reward our athletes as they strive for podium finishes,” Enabulele stated.
