Getafe’s head coach, José Bordalás, has expressed his desire for Nigeria international Chrisantus Uche to stay with the club.
Bordalás made this statement following Monday’s La Liga match, where Getafe secured a 2-1 victory against Sevilla.
He emphasised Uche’s importance to his plans, warning that allowing the player to leave could create significant challenges for the squad.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly close to agreeing a fee of just under €20 million for Uche, who is anticipated to sign a five-year contract. Despite speculation surrounding his departure, Uche participated fully in the match against Sevilla, playing the entire 90 minutes.
“Let’s hope he doesn’t leave. I’m against him departing; he’s a very important player, and this situation becomes more difficult every day,” Bordalás remarked after the game. “We can’t start from scratch each season without knowing the squad we’ll have. If Uche leaves, we face a very serious issue. I understand the circumstances, but we can’t be at the mercy of selling a player as crucial as Uche.”
Getafe president Ángel Torres confirmed Uche’s situation, acknowledging that financial regulations have left him with little choice but to consider a sale. Last season, Uche made 33 La Liga appearances, scoring four goals and providing six assists. He has also been selected for the Super Eagles squad for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, having been part of the Super Eagles team that won the Unity Cup in May.
