Ghanaian referee, Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, has received a hero’s welcome in his native Ghana following his return from officiating duties at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

A viral video making the rounds on social media shows the celebrated referee being ‘mobbed’ by cheering fans at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The warm reception featured drumming, singing, and applause from Ghanaians eager to honour his outstanding contribution to African football.

Laryea, regarded as one of the continent’s most experienced officials, was among the referees selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 35th edition of the AFCON. He made headlines for his performance during the high-tension semi-final clash between Nigeria and Morocco, a match that ended in controversy among some fans.

Despite the online criticism, particularly from sections of Nigerian supporters who accused him of favouring Morocco, Laryea has firmly defended his impartiality. Speaking to reporters in Accra, he maintained that he officiated the game strictly by the laws of football.

“For me, I just do my refereeing job and I don’t listen to what goes on social media. I just apply the laws of the game,” he said.

He also dismissed suggestions that social media banter between Nigerians and Ghanaians affected his performance, insisting his focus was purely professional.

Reacting to the overwhelming welcome he received on his return home on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Laryea expressed appreciation in a brief post on X (formerly Twitter):
