Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the inaugural Mixed 4x400m Relay and securing another place in the field event finals as the country’s medal pursuit gathered momentum.
The Nigerian quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George produced a commanding performance to win their heat in 3:14.58, establishing the first-ever Commonwealth Games record in the Mixed 4x400m Relay.
The team finished comfortably ahead of Australia, who crossed the line in 3:15.21, to qualify for the final as the fastest team and emerge as one of the favourites for the gold medal.
The performance also ensured the Nigerian quartet became the first athletes to hold the Commonwealth Games record in the newly introduced event.
In the field events, Ruth Usoro advanced to the women’s long jump final after producing a season’s best leap of 6.77m (+0.6) with her opening attempt. The mark comfortably exceeded the automatic qualifying standard of 6.70m, earning her a place in the medal round.
Nigeria also remained in contention in the men’s decathlon, with Jami Schlueter occupying fourth place after six events on 5,099 points. He is scheduled to complete his campaign during the evening session with the javelin throw and the 1,500m, where a strong finish could move him into the medal positions.
Team Nigeria will return to action later on Friday in several medal events.
Ezekiel Nathaniel is set to compete in the men’s 400m hurdles final, while Chinecherem Nnamdi will contest the men’s javelin final.
Sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike will also line up in the men’s 200m final as he aims to add to Nigeria’s medal haul.
With a Commonwealth Games record already secured and several athletes through to finals, Team Nigeria heads into the Day Eight evening session with renewed confidence and hopes of increasing its medal tally in Glasgow.
