Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Thursday commissioned the Gombe Geographic Information System (GOGIS) Field Office in Shehu Abubakar District and flagged off a statewide land title recertification exercise aimed at strengthening land administration and property ownership in the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Yahaya said the recertification exercise would require holders of manually issued land titles to present their documents for harmonisation with the state’s digitised records.

According to him, the exercise will strengthen land tenure security, eliminate ambiguities and identify fraudulent or duplicate titles.

The governor said the establishment of GOGIS had transformed land administration through the digitisation of records, improved transparency in land transactions and enhanced protection of property rights.

He noted that the Shehu Abubakar District, which forms part of the Gombe Special Capital Development Zone, has benefited from significant infrastructure investments, including roads, drainage systems, schools, hospitals and security facilities.

Yahaya also announced that the state would commence a comprehensive street naming and house numbering programme to improve service delivery, security and urban planning.

Earlier, the Director-General of GOGIS, Dr. Kabiru Usman Hassan, said the agency has digitised over 45,000 land records and more than 52 layouts, regularised about 18,000 customary titles and generated over N7.5 billion in land-related revenue.

He said the new field office would bring land administration services closer to residents and investors, while the recertification exercise would migrate existing titles into a secure digital database and strengthen ownership verification.

Hassan defended recent demolition and access road restoration exercises carried out by GOGIS and GOSUPDA, insisting they were undertaken in line with planning laws to protect public interest and maintain urban order.
