Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu on Thursday distributed 30 patrol vehicles to security operatives in the state’s joint taskforce to enhance their operational performance.

Governor Otu said the measure was an effort to beef up security in the state, and ensure that residents can sleep with both eyes closed.

The governor also renamed the state’s joint security outfit, Operation Akpakwu as Operation Okwok (bees).

At the official handover ceremony of the patrol vehicles, the govenor reminded that one of the policy thrusts of his administration is zero-tolerance for crime, stressing his strategy to achieve this by boosting the morale of security agencies.

Otu also pledged to do everything possible to ensure that he upgrade infrastructures, including internal road networks and remodel buildings within security formations in the state.

“Cross River State is safer than ever,” the governor declared. “Cases of kidnapping have declined significantly, and robbery is nearly nonexistent. These achievements are due to the dedication of our security forces.”

The governor further warned that government will deal decisively with anyone found wanting, irrespective of his or jer status.

“We are committed to ensuring peace, and anyone who threatens that peace will face the full weight of the law,” Otu vowed.

He enumerated future security plans of his administration to include strengthening marine patrols, acquiring gunboats and drones for advanced surveillance, and recruiting personnel for a homeland security.

Gov Otu also assured investors that Cross River remains a secure destination for business, with the government dedicated to protecting investments and ensuring security.

The governor charged residents of the state to remain vigilant and report suspicious moves by any group or individual to law enforcement agents.

In his remarks, the State Security Adviser, Major General Okoi Obono (Rtd), described the initiative as a milestone in the state’s fight against crime.

Explaining the significance of the new brand for the security network, Operation Okwok which in Efik word means “bee,” the security adviser cautioned, “Don’t let the sweetness of the bees fool you. Bees are highly territorial and fiercely protect their hive. Just like that, Operation Okwok is here to secure Cross River — producing honey when needed, but stinging when provoked,” he said.

Receiving the vehicles, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah commended Governor Otu for his unwavering support for security agencies and promised to reciprocate the gesture by arresting criminals to ensure the safety of the state.
