The director-general, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature, has asserted that Governor Abba Yusuf held discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the consent of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Bature made the claim on Arise Television’s Morning Show amid growing political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He alleged that the political move also had the backing of former deputy governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
According to him, the consultations were part of ongoing behind-the-scenes political realignments across the country ahead of the next election cycle.
The governor’s spokesperson further alleged that Kwankwaso was indirectly working towards President Tinubu’s re-election through strategic political engagements, although he admitted that such claims were largely based on prevailing political discussions.
Bature dismissed the prospects of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, getting mass support in Kano State, insisting that the state’s conservative political environment may not favour such an alliance.
He maintained that ideological differences among opposition figures could weaken efforts to build a formidable coalition against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Kano government mouthpiece questioned claims that about five million supporters attended a recent political gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, describing the figure as exaggerated and unrealistic.
According to him, the crowd estimate did not align with the capacity of available public venues in the state, including the Sani Abacha Stadium.
He said political consultations and strategic meetings were ongoing in parts of the South-West, particularly in Abeokuta and Ibadan, as politicians intensify moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
