Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the disbursement of N5 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuities and death benefits to pensioners and families of deceased civil servants, marking the sixth tranche of such intervention.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who noted that the latest payment brings the total amount settled so far to N32 billion out of the N48 billion inherited liabilities.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf said the N5 billion disbursement, effected on April 8, 2026, is part of his administration’s sustained efforts to clear the backlog of entitlements owed to retirees and next-of-kin of deceased workers.
He explained that the state had earlier paid N27 billion in five tranches as of December 2025, stressing that the current payment underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the lingering issue.
The governor reassured civil servants and pensioners that his administration remains resolute in settling all outstanding gratuities and death benefits before the end of his first tenure.
He also expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their patience, understanding and cooperation with the state government.
Yusuf commended the unions for supporting ongoing reforms aimed at providing lasting relief to pensioners and improving the welfare of public servants in the state.
While congratulating beneficiaries of the latest tranche, the governor urged them to utilise the funds prudently to improve their living conditions.
In their separate remarks, the Head of Civil Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota, and the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Pension Fund Trustees, Alhaji Habu Muhammad Fagge, lauded the governor’s commitment to clearing the backlog of outstanding payments.
They noted that the consistent release of funds has significantly reduced the burden of unpaid gratuities and death benefits, restoring confidence among retirees and civil servants in the state.
