Fourteen inmates serving various terms in Correctional Centres in Nasarawa State have been released following the prerogative of mercy granted them by Governor Abdullahi Sule.
The information to that effect was made public through a statement by the commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr Labaran Magaji, yesterday, in Lafia.
According to him, the gesture was in commemoration of the new year, which commenced on January 1, 2024.
The inmates included Sani Musa, Mohammed Maji, Danjuma Anthony, Ali Mohammed, Yahuza Turaki, Ibrahim Musa and Abdullahi Usman.
Others were ThankGod Bananas, Usman Idris, Adamu Sule, Terzungwe Mshi, Shehu Abubakar, Zaccheaus Ayuba and Surajo Abdullahi.
Magaji said the governor’s action was in line with Sections 212 (1) and (2) of 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers him to carry out such responsibility for the common good.
He also said the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy chaired by him was consulted before the action was taken as envisaged by the enabling legislation.
He urged the inmates to take advantage of the gesture by reforming themselves so as to contribute to the development of their immediate society, the state and country at large.
