Government Secondary School Ntiton Ekori, Yakurr local government area of Cross River State, has emerged  winner of engineering competition organised by the Association of Professional Women Engineers (APWEN), Calabar chapter.
The school won the star prize and received an undisclosed amount after beating 10 other schools in the competition that took place in Ugep  at the weekend.
The teacher of the winning school, Mr. Esu Offor, stated that the three girls who represented the school including Miss Delight Egwu, Joy Usani and Ire Okoi, won the engineering prize due to hardwork and thanked the girls for making their school proud.
The competition with the theme: “Together We Engineer”, sponsored by SERMATECH Construction firm, provided a platform for female students to participate in hands-on exercises and showcase their engineering skills.
The Chairman of APWEN Calabar chapter, Engr. Faith Edu-Itam, stated that the competition aimed to dispel the misconception that engineering was only for men.
She encouraged parents to support their daughters in pursuing engineering courses, emphasising that collective efforts can make Nigeria great.
Chairman of Yakurr local government area, Mr.Yabila Inyang, represented by Supervisor for Education, Mr. Godwin Thomas, praised APWEN for organising the engineering awareness campaign, describing it as a step in the right direction.
The Chairman of Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), Calabar Branch, Engr. Joseph Alaga, represented by Engr. George Ikpi Itam, advocated the use of teaching aids to mentor female students interested in becoming engineers.
