Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has called on political leaders and the people of Benue State to embrace peace, reconciliation and inclusiveness as the state celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Speaking as chairman of the occasion at the golden jubilee celebration in Makurdi on Saturday, Gowon said the milestone should serve as a new beginning for the state, anchored on unity, fairness and sustainable development.
He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia, for inviting him as the special guest of honour, describing the invitation as a privilege that revived memories of his longstanding relationship with the people of Benue.
“I am delighted to be back home. Benue has always made me feel at home, and I am proud to say so publicly,” Gowon said.
The former Head of State recalled his role in the creation of the former Benue-Plateau State in 1967 and the subsequent creation of Benue State in 1976, noting that he had maintained close personal and official ties with many distinguished sons and daughters of the state.
He described the anniversary as an opportunity not only to celebrate Benue’s achievements over the past five decades but also to reflect on its strengths and future prospects.
Gowon praised the state’s rich human resources, citing the contributions of prominent Benue indigenes, including the late J.S. Tarka, former Senate President David Mark, former governors, senior military officers and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
He also highlighted Benue’s agricultural potential, saying its status as the “Food Basket of the Nation” and one of Nigeria’s green belts positions it for accelerated agricultural growth and economic diversification.
According to him, the state’s abundant agricultural resources, combined with research and innovation, could transform Benue into a leading hub for value-added agricultural production.
The elder statesman, however, expressed concern over recurring insecurity and resource-based conflicts in parts of the state, describing the crises as unfortunate and man-made.
He expressed confidence that with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Hyacinth Alia, traditional rulers, political leaders and other stakeholders, lasting peace could be restored across the state.
Gowon urged leaders across ethnic and political divides to promote fairness, inclusiveness and mutual respect, stressing that enduring peace can only be achieved through dialogue and collective commitment.
“With a general sense of fairness, inclusivity and mutual respect, regardless of ideological or personal differences, it is possible to resolve today that Benue at 50 marks a new beginning for our state,” he said.
He congratulated the government and people of Benue on the state’s golden jubilee and expressed hope that the next chapter of its history would be defined by greater peace, unity and sustainable development.
