Group Kicks Against ‘Illegal Takeover’ In ADC, Demands Respect for Rule of Law

A coalition of civil society organisations advocating transparency and accountability has stepped into the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning against what it described as an “illegal takeover” and insisting on strict adherence to the rule of law.

The group accused a faction allegedly linked to former Senate President David Mark of attempting to forcefully assume control of the party’s leadership in violation of both the ADC constitution and subsisting court rulings.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the coalition’s spokesperson, Rt. Comrade Mike Femi, said the intervention became necessary to defend judicial authority and prevent the erosion of due process within the party.

According to him, the ADC constitution clearly outlines eligibility requirements for leadership positions, including a minimum period of membership and the fulfilment of statutory obligations, conditions he said were not met by those laying claim to the disputed leadership.

He maintained that these constitutional provisions, reinforced by recent judicial pronouncements, render any parallel leadership claims null and void.

“The law is clear, and the constitution of the party is explicit. Any attempt to circumvent these provisions amounts to an assault on democratic principles,” Femi stated.

The coalition further warned that disregard for legal processes by political actors could deepen instability within the party and pose broader risks to Nigeria’s democratic system.

It therefore called on all stakeholders to respect court decisions and abide by established rules governing party administration.

The group also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act decisively by enforcing court directives and recognising the leadership of Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, in line with judicial pronouncements.

It stressed the need for the electoral body to update its official records accordingly to prevent confusion and avoid further escalation of the crisis.

While appealing for calm among party members and the public, the coalition emphasised that the stability of Nigeria’s democracy rests firmly on respect for the rule of law.

“Political impunity may offer temporary gains, but the rule of law must remain supreme in any democratic society,” the group added.
