Guinea-Bissau stunned Nigeria with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday to move three points clear at the top of Group L in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying race.
The Djurtus produced a commanding performance in Bissau to condemn Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles to a damaging defeat and leave Nigeria in a precarious position in a group that offers only one qualifying ticket.
Tanzania, as one of the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, already have an automatic place at the tournament, leaving Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar battling for the group’s sole available qualifying spot.
Guinea-Bissau took control of the contest in the 15th minute when Franculino opened the scoring, sending the hosts into the interval with a 1-0 advantage.
Nigeria struggled to create a decisive response after the restart, and the hosts extended their lead in the 66th minute through M. Baldé.
With the Super Eagles unable to mount a comeback, Guinea-Bissau completed a comprehensive victory in the closing stages.
Á. Djaló scored the third goal in the fifth minute of added time to seal a 3-0 triumph and send the home supporters into celebration.
The result gives Guinea-Bissau six points from their opening two matches and a +5 goal difference, putting them at the summit of Group L.
Nigeria remain second on three points but now have a -2 goal difference, having beaten Madagascar 2-1 in their opening match before suffering the heavy defeat in Bissau.
The result leaves Chelle’s side with significant ground to make up against Guinea-Bissau, particularly with only one qualifying place available in the group.
Nigeria must now regroup quickly and improve both their results and goal difference in their remaining fixtures if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON alive.
