The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a young couple for allegedly getting married secretly without the knowledge or consent of their parents.
The arrest was confirmed by the Deputy Commander General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahidden Aminudeen who described the marriage as “un-Islamic and unacceptable.”
According to Aminuddeen, the couple whose names were withheld reportedly tied the knot at a recreational center after a facilitator arranged the payment of the bride price late on Wednesday night.
Hisbah Board, which is responsible for enforcing Islamic laws and moral conduct in the state, vowed to continue investigating the incident.
Aminuddeen reiterated that marriage is sacred in Islam, saying making a joke of the institution will not be tolerated.
“The board has arrested the couple and will continue to investigate and arrest their friends and accomplices who aided the secret marriage,” he said.
While commending the informants about the marriage, he urged the public to report similar cases to the relevant authorities.
