A former Kogi State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Leke Abejide, has called on Yoruba leaders in Northern Nigeria to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Association of Yoruba Traditional Leaders and Obas in the Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja, Abejide urged Yoruba leaders to foster unity and avoid divisive politics.

The event also featured the inauguration of the association’s new executive committee.

Abejide, who holds the title of Asiwaju of Yorubas in Kano State, emphasised that Yoruba unity is crucial for national influence.

“Yorubas form a significant part of Nigeria’s population. If we are removed from the equation, the gap will be deeply felt. That’s why we must remain united,” he said.

Abejide, a lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, pledged his support for the association’s development.

“I will support you, but only if we work together to support the President. Many of you are excelling in your fields and earning respect across communities. That influence must be channeled appropriately,” he added.

Highlighting his commitment to community development, he announced the launch of a 57.2-kilometer road project and unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art Yoruba palace in Kano.

“This is more than just a structure; it’s about strengthening our influence and ensuring the welfare of our people. When Yoruba people speak with one voice, we make a real impact,” he said.

The newly appointed Chairman of the traditional rulers’ association, Muritala Adeleke, Serikinwa Yoruba of Funtua, Katsina State, vowed to enhance unity and implement socioeconomic programs benefiting Yoruba communities in the North.

Similarly, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdul Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi, urged Yoruba leaders in the North to maintain strong ties with their traditional rulers back home and protect the interests of their people.

Professor Oluranti Ojo of the University of Abuja, the event’s Guest Speaker, advised Yoruba traditional rulers to uphold their role as representatives of Yoruba values outside the Southwest.

Oba Jimoh Alao Yusuf, the Oba Yoruba of Gombe and Secretary General of the association, stressed the importance of law-abiding citizenship ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Hajia Idayat Bolanle, the Iyalaje Yoruba of Kano, urged the new leadership to ensure the inclusion of Yoruba women in development initiatives, stating that empowerment and inclusivity must go beyond politics.
