Gone are the days when Nigeria’s security agencies saw one another as rivals. In the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, one thing is clear: synergy at all levels and the maintenance of mutual respect are sacrosanct. For the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Professor Audi Abubakar, securing Nigeria is impossible without collaboration. While making his inaugural speech last month after he was reappointed by President Tinubu for another five-year tenure to steer the agency to greater heights, He disclosed that; all critical stakeholders within the nation’s security architecture must come together as one united front, not as competitors. His mantra is simple: professional synergy and shared intelligence are the most potent weapons against insecurity. That is why he has kept his office open to all sister agencies, insisting that the war against insecurity must be won against all odds.

On Tuesday, the 21st of April 2026, at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja, something remarkable happened. It was not the kind of visit that makes headlines for pomp. No heavy motorcades were blocking Abuja traffic for hours, no blaring sirens. But when Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, walked calmly into the office of Professor Audi Abubakar, something far more significant than a courtesy call took place: a strategic alliance was birthed. The age-long wall of inter-agency rivalry was shattered and uprooted. In its place emerged a renewed symbiotic relationship between the Nigerian Police Force and the NSCDC.

For those who have followed the trajectory of internal security in Nigeria, the message is unmistakable: the era of silos is over. In its place stands a formidable partnership between the country’s largest general law enforcement agency and a reinvigorated NSCDC, an agency that, under Professor Audi Abubakar, has transformed from a reactive civil guard into a proactive, specialized force protecting the very jugular of the Nigerian economy against economic saboteurs and other criminal-minded individuals determined to destroy our collective future.

Before we examine the ripple effects of this synergy, we must first acknowledge the elephant in the room. Professor Audi Abubakar has, in a remarkably short time has quietly revolutionised and redefined the NSCDC with no fanfare. When he took the helm over four years ago, before he was reappointed for another tenure last month, many saw the Corps as a secondary security outfit but today, that perception has been shattered and the security outfit has assumed its role as a critical national security outfit which is saving Nigeria billions of dollars, including reducing oil theft, illegal mining, loss of railway infrastructure among others. Under Audi’s leadership, the NSCDC has recorded giant strides that would make any security chief proud. With the scourge of school abductions terrorizing the nation, Audi Abubakar deployed the NSCDC’s Special Intelligence Squad (SIS) to high-risk schools across the North-West and North-Central. Today, over 500 schools have been risk-assessed, with armed Civil Defence personnel stationed at vulnerable institutions. The result? A measurable decline in successful school raids. Parents who once kept their children at home now have a reason to hope. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, intelligence from the SIS helped foil at least six planned mass abductions in Kaduna and Katsina states.

In a bold move to curb illegal mining which intelligence reports have linked directly to banditry and terrorism financing, Audi created the Mine Marshals. This specialized unit tackles illegal mining at its roots by going deep into forests and arresting those involved. The Mine Marshals, armed with geological intelligence and tactical training, have so far arrested over 400 illegal miners, sealed off dozens of hazardous sites, and reclaimed millions of naira in lost revenue for the Federal Government. For the first time, Nigeria is fighting back against those who strip our earth to buy bullets. In March 2026, Mine Marshals in collaboration with local hunters destroyed 17 illegal mining sites in Zamfara State alone, recovering 30 kilograms of gold-bearing ore.

Perhaps the most audacious achievement lies in the Niger Delta, where the Corps is securing critical oil facilities alongside sister agencies like the Army and the Navy. Audi Abubakar’s NSCDC, through its Anti-Vandalism Unit and Critical National Assets Infrastructure Department, has destroyed over 3,000 illegal refining sites and arrested hundreds of oil thieves. More importantly, they have shifted from reactive firefighting to proactive surveillance, using technology, including; drones and satellite imaging and community engagement to protect pipelines, flow stations, and power grids across the country. In the first half of 2026, oil production in areas with heavy NSCDC presence increased by an estimated 120,000 barrels per day, according to industry sources.

The IGP, Tunji Disu is no stranger to innovative security thinking but his visit to the NSCDC headquarters signalled something profound, the Police leadership now sees the Civil Defence as a partner in progress fighting for the same goal which is securing lives and properties.
According to the agreement made during the historic meeting, the IGP and the CG reached an operational framework that will fundamentally alter how insecurity is tackled in Nigeria. First, a Joint Intelligence Fusion Centre is to be established immediately. For the first time, intelligence gathered by NSCDC’s Mine Marshals in Zamfara and other states will flow directly to Police tactical commanders. Likewise, Police intelligence on bandit logistics will inform NSCDC operations protecting rail lines and power towers. No more withholding of sensitive and critical intelligence information and no more turf wars.

Secondly, joint rapid response teams will be deployed to flashpoints, specifically, the Police Mobile Force (PMF) and NSCDC’s Special Anti-Vandalism Squad will conduct synchronised patrols around critical assets like; dams, transmission stations and oil pipelines. Vandals who once exploited the gap between jurisdictions will find both agencies waiting.

Thirdly, a harmonised training curriculum is on the table as Police recruits will now receive basic modules on critical asset protection, while NSCDC personnel will undergo advanced Police training in general crime fighting. This cross-pollination of skills means that in any emergency, the first responder whether Police or Civil Defence will act with full competence.

So what does this mean for the average Nigerian? Considering the power sector, vandals destroy transmission towers with impunity, plunging cities into darkness but under the new synergy, NSCDC’s intelligence on vandal networks will trigger immediate Police-led manhunts. The days of hitting a tower and disappearing into the bush are numbered. Consider the Niger Delta, Illegal refiners who bribe local security or slip through cracks will now face a unified front as NSCDC destroys the site; Police pursue the financiers and the criminal ecosystem shrinks. Consider the mining sector, bandits who use illegal mining revenues to buy AK-47s will find their supply chain severed by Mine Marshals, while the police dismantle their camps. Safe Schools operations will now enjoy Police backup for rapid response to any abduction attempt.

In order to make all these a reality in line with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope mandate, Professor Audi Abubakar has built an NSCDC that brings tangible value to the table. With the massive equipment acquired and distributed to his men; they are more than ready for combat both aerial and on the ground. Last month, the equipment distributed by Professor Audi to all the state formation across the country includes; three drones for aerial monitoring, operational backpacks equipped with mini tablets, solar chargers, GPS coordinate trackers, and situation room connectivity packs to monitor personnel movements in real-time, alongside one hundred bulletproof vests, one hundred helmets, two hundred pairs of combat boots, one hundred pairs of knee and ankle caps, twenty operational goggles with night vision capabilities, two hundred pairs each of agro rangers uniforms, blue conventional uniforms, white uniforms, two hundred berets with corresponding belts, fifty shocking batons, twenty chain cutters, torchlight batons, five pen recorders, twenty body cameras, ten binoculars, water dispensers for administrative duties, copies of the code of conduct, the NSCDC Act, and the Standard Operating Procedure manual.

Audi has earned the accolades he is getting through sheer dint of hard work through mine shafts, oil creeks, and school gates. Professor Audi Abubakar’s leadership has proven that the war against insecurity cannot be won with arms alone; it requires operational wisdom and institutional synergy. By opening his doors to sister agencies, he has demonstrated the kind of collaborative spirit that defines modern, democratic policing. As this new alliance takes root, Nigeria can finally look forward to a more secure future, built not on the dominance of one agency, but on the strength of a united front.
