American actor Ian Somerhalder has disclosed the financial crisis that led to his exit from Hollywood, revealing that a failed business venture left him and his wife, Nikki Reed, with over $10 million in debt.
The Vampire Diaries star explained that despite his successful television career, a company he founded while filming the hit series collapsed due to poor management and alleged fraud. The resulting financial loss forced the couple to sell their homes, cars, and personal belongings to satisfy creditors.
Speaking on his recovery, Somerhalder credited his wife, known for her role in the Twilight saga, for leading the legal and financial negotiations that allowed them to settle the massive debt. He noted that the experience was a “humbling” journey that required two years of intensive work and financial sacrifice.
“Eight figures is a hard hole to climb out of,” Somerhalder stated. “We sold houses, paintings, cars, watches, everything.”
The 47-year-old, who retired from acting seven years ago, has since transitioned into the business world, co-founding a successful bourbon brand and a health supplement company.
