Prominent pro-democracy advocate, Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke, a.k.a. Mr. Vote Count, has congratulated Professor Joash Amupitan on his appointment as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
LEADERSHIP reports that Amupitan’s nomination was on Thursday confirmed by a resolution of the Senate after about two-hour of screening by the Senate.
Amb. Nkweke, who is also the International Spokesman of International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), described the appointment as a welcome development that will boost the credibility of the electoral process in Nigeria.
“We commend President Bola Tinubu for recognising the expertise and dedication of Professor Amupitan. We urge the National Assembly to give him a smooth clearance to enable him to effectively discharge his duties,” Mr. Vote Count said.
Meanwhile, Amb. Nkweke is mobilising over a thousand major civil society groups in the country to endorse and support Professor Amupitan’s appointment. “We believe that Professor Amupitan has the requisite experience and skills to lead INEC effectively. We assure him of our unwavering support as he takes on this new challenge,” Mr. Vote Count added.
The appointment of INEC chairman involves several constitutional steps, including nomination by the President, profiling by the Department of State Services (DSS), and confirmation by the Senate.
