The students of The Polytechnic Ibadan on Tuesday came out in large numbers to stage a massive protest over Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to rename the institution to Victor Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic in honour of the former governor of Oyo State and first Rector of the institution.

Consequently, on Tuesday, the institution’s students gathered to stage a massive protest. They expressed their discontent with the name change, supported their displeasure with solidarity songs, and strongly called for the name to be reverted to its old name.

The demonstration disrupted traffic along the busy Sango–Eleyele Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, leaving many residents, travellers, and workers unable to move freely or access the school premises.

It would be recalled that Gov Seyi Makinde recently called for the Polytechnic Ibadan to be renamed after former governor Victor Omololu Olunloyo. The development, however, did not go down well with many of the institution’s alumni and the students’ union.

The students moved from their campus to the government Secretariat gate in large numbers, while the road was filled with students holding placards and openly expressing their displeasure with the recent name change.

As a result, commuters and residents were stranded on Tuesday as students of the Polytechnic Ibadan protested Governor Seyi Makinde’s renaming of the institution.
