The umbrella socio-cultural organisation of the Ibibio ethnic nationality, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio (MMI), has commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for approving a ₦31 billion Economic Empowerment Programme (EEP) designed to support small business owners, farmers, traders, transport operators, youths and women across the state’s 31 local government areas.

The group described the initiative as a timely intervention that would cushion the impact of prevailing economic hardship and stimulate grassroots economic development.

Governor Umo Eno recently approved the release of the ₦31 billion package, with ₦1 billion allocated to each of the 31 local government areas. The programme is expected to benefit about 165,912 youths, women, traders, farmers, transport operators and small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking in Uyo, the International Public Relations Officer (IPRO) of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Pastor Idongesit Ikono, said the intervention demonstrates the state government’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and shared prosperity.

“The allocation of ₦1 billion to each local government area underscores a bold and unprecedented commitment to grassroots economic development, social inclusion and shared prosperity. It is a practical demonstration of purposeful leadership and a clear investment in the productive capacity of Akwa Ibom people,” Ikono said.

He noted that the programme covers youth skills acquisition, vocational training and starter packs, women’s cooperative business support, traders’ grants, agricultural support and farm inputs, SME development and enterprise growth, as well as transport empowerment.

According to him, the initiative has the potential to deepen entrepreneurship, boost local enterprise, increase agricultural productivity, create sustainable employment and significantly reduce poverty across the state.

“Beyond the immediate financial support, the programme lays a solid foundation for long-term economic resilience by equipping beneficiaries with the tools and resources required to build enduring livelihoods,” he added.

The organisation also expressed confidence in the implementation committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Enobong Uwah, saying it expects the distribution process to be transparent, accountable and free from political interference.

MMI urged the committee to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries emerge through a fair and verifiable selection process based on merit and equity.

The group further called on beneficiaries to utilise the grants and other support judiciously by investing in productive ventures capable of creating jobs, expanding businesses and improving household incomes.

Reaffirming its commitment to the development of Akwa Ibom State, MMI pledged continued support for policies and programmes that promote economic empowerment, social justice, unity and sustainable development.

It also urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful implementation of the programme for the overall benefit of the state.
