The Ochetoha K’Idoma Forum has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of former Secretary to the Government of Benue State (SSG), Professor David Onu Salifu, describing the attack as a tragic loss to the Idoma nation and a stark reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement issued, the socio-cultural organisation expressed profound sorrow over the death of the former Benue SSG, who was attacked by armed men on Thursday, 2 July, while travelling along the Wukari–Makurdi highway to attend the burial of an uncle in his hometown.

According to the forum, the attackers reportedly forced Professor Salifu out of his vehicle, shot him at close range and left him critically injured. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, where he died from his injuries in the early hours of Friday.

The organisation described the killing as “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” saying Nigeria has lost one of its most accomplished administrators, academics and community leaders.

The forum said Professor Salifu served as Secretary to the Government of Benue State between 2011 and 2015 under the administration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, where he earned a reputation for administrative competence, integrity and dedication to public service.

It noted that, beyond his role in government, the late Salifu was a distinguished Professor of Public Administration and former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Federal University, Wukari. He was widely respected for his contributions to research in governance and public policy and for mentoring young scholars and public administrators.

According to the statement, his academic work focused on issues such as intergovernmental relations, the federal character principle and practical solutions to Nigeria’s recurring herder-farmer conflicts.

The forum added that Professor Salifu remained deeply committed to the development of his native Apa Local Government Area, where he was admired for his humility, accessibility and commitment to community service.

It also described him as a successful farmer, devoted Christian and family man whose life reflected discipline, integrity and selfless service.

Expressing concern over the country’s deteriorating security situation, the Ochetoha K’Idoma Forum said the continued attacks on travellers and rural communities had become intolerable and demanded stronger measures to protect lives and property.

“The protection of life remains the primary responsibility of every government. When a former Secretary to the Government of a state, a professor and respected community leader can be murdered on a public highway in broad daylight, it raises serious concerns about the safety of ordinary Nigerians,” the statement said.

The organisation acknowledged reports that troops of Operation Whirl Stroke had engaged the suspected attackers but urged security agencies to sustain efforts until every person connected with the crime is apprehended and prosecuted.

It also called on the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to intensify efforts to restore security across the country, stressing that citizens should be able to travel freely and carry out their lawful activities without fear.

The forum extended its condolences to Professor Salifu’s wife, children, relatives, colleagues, students and the entire Idoma nation, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

It said that although his life was cut short in tragic circumstances, his legacy of scholarship, exemplary public service and community leadership would continue to inspire future generations.
