The inspector-general of police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has described promotion within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as a deliberate, merit-based process that reflects institutional confidence in officers’ leadership capacity, judgement, and readiness for higher responsibility.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior police officers, the IGP said the elevation of officers to senior ranks goes beyond the wearing of new insignia, noting that it signifies trust in their discipline, professionalism, and ability to lead effectively under pressure.
He congratulated the newly promoted deputy inspector-general of police, assistant inspectors-general of police, and commissioners of police, stating that their advancement followed years of consistent service, operational exposure, and postings across diverse commands and security environments.
The IGP emphasised that senior rank must translate into leadership effectiveness, stressing the need for clarity of thought, decisiveness, emotional restraint, and strategic awareness in command responsibilities. He noted that promotion also represents a renewed call to service, with heightened administrative, operational, and ethical accountability.
The IGP also warned that misconduct tolerated at senior levels undermines discipline and erodes public trust.
He charged the officers to uphold integrity, accountability, and respect for human dignity, while enforcing professional standards firmly and fairly.
The IGP also stated that the promotion showed NPF’s commitment to transparent, merit-based promotion processes that motivate performance, strengthen command structures, and enhance morale.
He assured that the Force would continue to protect the integrity of its promotion system as a core institutional value.
He further noted that with increased rank comes greater public visibility and scrutiny, requiring senior officers to demonstrate competence not only in operations but also in stakeholder engagement, inter-agency collaboration, and community relations.
