The Opposition Coalition on the platform of African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government to immortalise former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London, describing him as a statesman whose contributions to Nigeria should be permanently enshrined in the national consciousness.
In a statement issued on Monday in Kano, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, announced a three-day national mourning across the party and the suspension of all political activities at national and state levels during the period.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of exceptional character. As a soldier, he fought bravely to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of our nation,” Senator Mark said.
“As a democratically elected president, he contributed significantly to the growth and consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria. His leadership reflected discipline, commitment, and a deep sense of patriotism.”
Mark urged the Federal Government to ensure Buhari’s name and legacy are permanently preserved through the establishment of monuments, institutions, or national initiatives that reflect the values he upheld.
“We believe it is only fitting that his name and contributions be etched permanently into the national memory through the establishment of monuments, institutions, or initiatives that reflect the values he stood for,” he said.
The ADC extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the government, and all Nigerians, urging party members and supporters to observe the mourning period with “solemnity and respect.”
“ADC extends its deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and all Nigerians mourning this great loss,” Mark added.
LEADERSHIP reports that Katsina State governor, Dikko Radda, had revealed that Buhari’s remains were expected to arrive Nigeria on Tuesday, with burial scheduled for 2:00pm in his hometown of Daura.
