Team Nigeria Depart For World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Nigeria’s delegation of athletes and officials has departed for the 2025 World Athletics Championships taking place in Tokyo, Japan, set to commence on Saturday, September 13.

While some athletes based in the United States have already arrived in Tokyo, the contingent includes a blend of home-based competitors and team officials.

Last week, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria revealed a roster of 15 athletes, comprising seven women and eight men. Leading the squad is the 100m hurdles world record holder and reigning world champion,

Tobi Amusan, who is eager to showcase her best form on a global stage once again.
Amusan will be joined by shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and emerging 400m hurdles talent Ezekiel Nathaniel. Long jump star Ese Brume, who holds the African record with a distance of 7.17m, also features on the team. Given her previous successes in Tokyo, hopes are high for another medal-winning performance from Brume.

Other athletes included in the squad are Samuel Ogazi (400m), Kayinsola Ajayi (100m), Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons (discus), Prestina Ochonogor (long jump), Obiageri Amaechi (discus), Charles Godfred (long jump), Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer), Israel S. Okon (100m), and Chidi Okezie (400m).
