A group, Imo Progressives Movement in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged a plot by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to import 2,000 militants into the state ahead of the November 11 governorship election.
Director-general of the movement Jeff Nwaoha made the allegation at a press conference in Owerri, the state capital yesterday in a reaction to the statement credited to the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, opposing the police national security conference scheduled for Imo.
The group said it was shocked that the PDP was opposing the police national security conference in Imo aimed to provide peace and security.
The director of media in Sam/Jones Campaign Organisation, Ikenna Onuoha, said Senator Samuel Anyanwu is a peaceful person and will not indulge in any act inimical to the citizenry.
He said those whose stock in trade is violence know themselves and declared that “this assertion by the APC could be likened to the kettle calling the pot black.
“This accusation is unfounded and the figment of their imagination. They should look inwards, restore confidence among the populace in respect of the level of insecurity ravaging the state,” he said.
But Nwaoha said, “What Imo people must know is that agents of PDP have sealed a deal with two warlords in Rivers and Edo States to invade Imo State with over 2,000 armed militants and unleash mayhem on the populace to stop the governorship election from holding. These bandits are to be deployed across the 27 local government areas of the state, and their mandate is to attack electoral officials and hijack and divert electoral materials.
“IPM is now curious to ask: ‘Why are PDP agents scared of a security conference in Imo? The answer is simple because the conference will thwart their dark agenda to import militants and set Imo ablaze’. It is very unfortunate,” he said.
